Benzoyl peroxide is a topical medication that is commonly used to treat acne. It is widely available in various concentrations and forms over-the-counter. It works by killing the bacteria that cause acne, as well as by reducing inflammation and unclogging the pores. When applied to the skin, benzoyl peroxide breaks down into benzoic acid and oxygen, which helps to kill the bacteria that can cause acne. The acne causing bacteria prefer to hide in your pores where there is no oxygen, so the presence of oxygen from benzoyl peroxide damage the bacteria. It also helps to remove dead skin cells, oil, and other debris from the pores, which can help to prevent them from becoming clogged.
If you are using benzoyl peroxide it is important to know that it is a bleaching agent. If you are not careful you may find your darkly colored clothes start to bleach white or orange. This is why I recommend using an old towel to dry your face when using a BP wash.
If you are interested in incorporating benzoyl peroxide into you skincare routine you can do so using a wash like the 208SKN BP Cleanser, or the Clear Choice Spot Treatment as a leave on option.
It’s important to note that the percentage of benzoyl peroxide is not the most important factor when treating acne. Studies have shown that lower concentrations (2.5%) are just as effective as higher concentrations (10%). The higher concentrations can potentially cause more irritation in those with sensitive skin however.
When you see a provider at Treasure Valley Dermatology we can discuss how to incorporate benzoyl peroxide into your acne treatment routine. There are some topical medications, like retinol, that should not be used at the same time as BP. On the other hand a topical prescription like clindamycin may enhance the efficacy of BP.
