Hair loss is one of the most common conditions we treat at Treasure Valley Dermatology. When seeking treatment for hair loss it is best to make an appointment just for that purpose so that we can best meet your needs. It is also important to understand that while hair loss is a true medical condition many insurance companies treat it as a cosmetic concern and do not cover treatment for hair loss. We will help you know if your hair loss is likely to be covered by your insurance provider, but it is always helpful to call your insurance company and verify your benefits.
There are many different types of hair loss that can affect both men and women. Some of the most common types of hair loss include:
This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting around 70-80% of men and 40-50% of women. It is caused by a combination of genetics and hormones, and is characterized by thinning of the hair on the scalp. While it is considered more socially acceptable for men to lose hair it can still be quite distressing to experience hair loss. There are many treatment options for hair loss for both men and women. We are happy to assist you in the diagnosis and treatment of your hair loss.
This type of hair loss is caused by a disruption in the hair growth cycle. It can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, infections (including COVID), certain medications, or a change in hormones. It typically causes hair to thin all over the scalp, rather than in specific areas. Telogen effluvium (TE) typically results in dramatic hair loss 3-4 months following the stressful event. In most cases of TE the individual will experience full regrowth of hair after the period of shedding. However, in some circumstances this may unmask a more challenging and long term form of hair loss. Treatments are available for TE and we are happy to discuss these with you at your appointment.
This is an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss on the scalp and other parts of the body. It can be acute (sudden and severe) or chronic (persistent and long-lasting). Alopecia areata (AA) usually results in smaller circular patches of hair loss that may last for a few weeks or months. Some individuals will experience larger and more dramatic areas of hair loss that may be less responsive to treatment. In other cases an individual may lose all of the hair on their head, or even across their entire body. New medications have recently been approved for the treatment of AA which we can discuss at Treasure Valley Dermatology.
This type of hair loss is caused by tight hairstyles, such as cornrows or ponytails, that put excessive tension on the hair shaft. It can lead to thinning and breakage of the hair, especially at the hairline and temples. You can regrow hair in traction alopecia if the problem is recognized quickly and the hair style is changed. The longer an individual chooses a hairstyle that places traction on the hair the greater risk that the problem can become permanent.
This type of hair loss is caused by scarring on the scalp, which can be caused by various conditions, including lichen planopilaris, folliculitis decalvans, and discoid lupus erythematosus. It can lead to permanent hair loss. Many of these conditions can be associated with other health problems, therefore expert consultation is important. As these conditions can result in permanent hair loss it is important to quickly recognize and treat them.
In order to properly diagnose the type of hair loss we may need to order laboratory work, or even perform a biopsy on the scalp.
It's important to note that hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, and it is important to see a dermatologist or other healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
