Required education
To become board-certified, a dermatologist must complete a rigorous training program that includes:
A bachelor's degree in a related field
Four years of medical school
A year of supervised clinical training (internship)
Three years of dermatology residency training
After completing their training, dermatologists must pass a comprehensive exam administered by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) to become board-certified. This certification process ensures that dermatologists have the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to provide high-quality care to their patients.

Dr. Portela completed his undergraduate degree at Idaho State University graduating with an honors bachelor of science in zoology. He then completed medical school at Des Moines University in Des Moines, IA where he graduated near the top of his class. Following medical school he matched into a competitive dermatology internship and residency through Michigan State University where he served as the chief-resident during his final year.
He has now been practicing in the treasure valley for over 5 years and is regarded as one of Idaho’s top dermatologists.
